My name is Nico and my primary career focus is to address significant social issues which lack proper articulation, utilizing whichever medium fits the situation best.
I grew up as a queer boy in Italy to an Italian father and Iranian mother. I found a tremendous amount of familiarity with the concept of othering and identity concealment, forcing me to take a critical understanding of my own life from a young age. Ostracized from the heteronormative macho Italian culture, I developed a unique relationship with the internet and online social platforms. Inspired by the rich humanities of the Italian education system and my affinity for digital culture I began coding and constructing virtual work articulating my struggles, hoping one day to be able to normalize my identity for future young-ins in my position.
In the past year I have received a grant for a project with CHLA which utilizes fashion, and Arduino sensors to address air quality concerns, as well as a grant for a wearable tech project which combines the art of dance and muscle sensing technology to discuss the concept of posthumanism and identity in the digital age.
As I mature I will continue to fight for the voices of those left unheard and hidden, not only through art but through political activism as well through my work as an ambassador for the LGBT center. I consider art as only the most personal medium to reach those hidden deep within themselves, and I plan on exploring more potent and public mediums such as public policy as I continue my graduate studies at USC.
